Pesantren Ramah Lingkungan: Internalisasi Nilai-Nilai Ekologi Dalam Tradisi Pendidikan Islam

Abstract

The environmental crisis affecting Indonesia calls for a systemic response from educational institutions, including pesantren, which represent one of the oldest forms of Islamic educational institutions in the Indonesian archipelago. This study examines how pesantren integrate ecological values into their Islamic educational traditions and how such integration generates socio-ecological impacts on surrounding communities. Employing a qualitative case study approach at Pesantren Moderat At-Thohiriyah in Pelamunan, Banten, the study collected data through in-depth interviews with kiai, ustadz, and santri; non-participant observation; and analysis of institutional program and policy documents. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The findings reveal three interrelated dynamics. First, ecological values are integrated into the pesantren curriculum through the teaching of fiqh al-bi’ah and classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning). Second, environmental management practices, such as the utilization of organic waste within the pesantren, are rooted in the synergy between Islamic principles, including khalifah, mizan, and islah, and local ecological wisdom. Third, the environmentally friendly pesantren program generates measurable socio-ecological impacts, including changes in students’ environmental behavior, reduced use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and increased environmental literacy among communities surrounding the pesantren. This study contributes to the growing literature on faith-based environmental education and pesantren-based ecological practices, while reaffirming the strategic role of pesantren as agents of ecological transformation in Indonesia.
